Behaviour of dinitrogen species adsorbed on a Co/Al2O3 catalyst with or without coadsorbed hydrogen studied by infrared spectroscopy

Abstract

The adsorption of nitrogen over an alumina-supported cobalt catalyst has been studied by means of infrared spectroscopy. An infrared band due to dinitrogen species adsorbed over the catalyst appears at 2214 cm–1 at 93 K. The band shifts to lower frequency by ca. 20 cm–1 in the presence of strongly adsorbed hydrogen, while it shifts to higher frequency by 50 cm–1 when hydrogen is weakly adsorbed on the catalyst. The effects of the coexistence of hydrogen over the catalyst are discussed.
