Electrode kinetics of the CdII/Cd–Hg system in ethylene glycol–water mixtures

Abstract

The kinetics of the CdII/Cd–Hg system in ethylene glycol–water mixtures containing different concentrations of LiClO4 has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. At scan rate >0.2 V s–1 the system shows quasireversible behaviour, whereas at lower scan rates it behaves reversibly. The diffusion coefficient for Cd in mercury, the reversible half-wave potentials of the CdII ion, the transfer coefficient for the electroreduction of CdII and the apparent standard rate constants of the system have been determined. The change in the kinetics with solvent composition at each LiClO4 concentration tested is discussed in terms of existing models.
