Syntheses and molecular structures of molybdenum complexes containing an η3-butadienyl ligand and its hydromethoxylated derivative

Abstract

Reaction of Ph4P[Mo(bipy)Cl(CO)3](bipy = bipyridine) with ClCH2C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCH2Cl in wet methanol yields [Mo(bipy)Cl(CO)23-CH2[– with combining dot below][– with combining dot below]C–[– with combining dot below][– with combining dot below](CO2Me)–[– with combining dot below][– with combining dot below]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2}](1), which contains an η3-bonded trans-butadienyl ligand; under anhydrous conditions in methanol–tetrahydrofuran [Mo(bipy)Cl(CO)23-CH2[– with combining dot below][– with combining dot below]C(CO2Me)–[– with combining dot below][– with combining dot below]C(Me)(OMe)}](2) is formed: the η3-allyl ligand in (2) can be formally derived by addition of MeOH across the non-co-ordinated C[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2 entity in (1), so yielding –Me and –OMe substituents in syn- and anti-conformations respectively.
