The e.s.r. spectrum of the title aluminium-centred radical, both in fluid solution and trapped in polycrystalline (Me3N)2AlH3, is in accord with a quasi-trigonal bipyramidal structure; the reactions of this radical with alkyl halides and with alkenes are described.
