A formal synthesis of (±)-thienamycin

Abstract

An α-silylethylidene-β-lactam is generated via chlorosulphonyl isocyanate (CSI) addition to a silylated allenyl sulphide and converted into a key intermediate for the synthesis of thienamycin.
