Equilibrium and kinetic studies of pentanol solubilisation by hexadecylpyridinium chloride micelles

Abstract

Equilibrium pentanol activities and ultrasonic relaxation measurements are reported for aqueous micellar solutions of pentanol and hexadecyl pyridinium chloride (HDPC). In 0.1 mol dm–3 HDPC pentanol activity is proportional to its concentration. The two sets of measurements indicate that pentanol monomer addition to the micelles is diffusion controlled, that the specific rate of pentanol release from the micelles increases with increasing pentanol content thereof and that pentanol addition decreases the equilibrium number of surfactant ions per micelle.
