Catalytic effect of cobalt on the hydrogen peroxide-Pyrogallol Red redox reaction

Abstract

Kinetic-spectrophotometric studies of the uncatalysed reaction between Pyrogallol Red (PGR)-hydrogen peroxide and the cobalt(II)-catalysed hydrogen peroxide oxidation of PGR have been made. The effect of the acidity, reagent concentrations and temperature have been studied. The catalysed reaction is zero order with respect to PGR, first order with respect to hydrogen peroxide and cobalt, and shows a first-order inverse dependence on borate concentration. A kinetic model for the catalytic reaction is proposed.
