Proton affinity of gaseous ammonia

Abstract

There is a dispute regarding the exact magnitude of the proton affinity of gaseous ammonia, Ap(NH3). Using a relationship between the enthalpies of hydration of pairs of gaseous ions and viscosity B coefficients of the corresponding salts in aqueous solution we are able to estimate the value of this key thermodynamic quantity to be 859 ± 2 kJ mol–1 at 298.15 K.
