The effect of charge-transfer interactions on the photochemical reaction of 2-vinylnaphthalene

Abstract

Charge-transfer interactions between 2-vinylnaphthalene (VN) in the excited singlet state and amines in the ground state significanty alter the product distribution in the photochemical reaction of VN, increasing the trans: cis ratio of 1,2-di(2-naphthyl)cyclobutane from 1 : 10 in the absence of amines to ca. 2 : 1 in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane.
