Direct spectrophotometric determination of periodate using cyclohexane-1,3-dione bisthiosemicarbazone monohydrochloride

Abstract

The influences of different experimental parameters on the reaction between periodate and cyclohexane-1,3-dione bisthiosemicarbazone monohydrochloride were studied and the optimum conditions for the spectrophotometric determination of periodate were established. The molar absorptivity at 415 nm was 1.56 × 104 l mol–1 cm–1 and the relative standard deviation for 8.0 p.p.m. of periodate was 0.76%. The described method is both direct and simple and modification of the procedure allows the determination of periodate in the presence of similar or lower amounts of iodate. The same modification principles are also applicable for the indirect determination of some organic compounds via the Malaprade reaction.
