Influence of electrical fields on the nucleation of crystal growth in some cycloalcohols

Abstract

The lower cycloalcohols exist in more than one solid structural phase. In a recent investigation of the phase structures of the four cycloalcohols from cyclopentanol to cyclo-octanol it was observed that time-dependent transformations between some of the phases occurred, and that at least one of these transformations was sensitive to the application of an electric field. Further field-sensitive transitions have since been observed and are reported. The effect is discussed in terms of a field-dependent nucleation of the growing phase.
