d-Orbital directed X-ray photoemission from some transition-metal fluoride single crystals and associated Xα calculations. MnF2 and KMnF3

Abstract

Angle-resolved photoemission energy distributions (PED) have been obtained from the valence bands of manganese(II) fluoride (MnF2) and potassium manganese(II) fluoride (KMnF3) single crystals using Mg Kα radiation. Pronounced variation in the PED was observed as the electron take-off angle was varied relative to the crystalline axes, KMnF3 showing similar though more pronounced results. The intensity variation is well explained by the matrix-element model, and the t2geg separations are in reasonable agreement with an SCF Xα calculation on the cluster MnF4–6.
