Absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of some fd transitions in Ce3+:Na3Y (C4H4O5)3·2NaClO4·6H2O

Abstract

The polarized absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (m.c.d.) spectra of some 4f1→ 5d1 transitions in Ce3+ in trigonal crystals of optically active Na3 Y(C4H4O5)3· 2NaClO4· 6H2O have been measured between 5 and 300 K up to energies of 43 400 cm–1. Three of the five Kramers doublets of the excited 5d1 configuration were located. M.c.d. data were used to determine the absolute value of the magnetic moment of the ground state as ca. 0.045β. The excited-state electronic properties are discussed using the descent in symmetry model. No circular dichroism was observed for any of the transitions indicating a value for the magnetic dipole oscillator strength of ⩽10–12.
