Structural studies of matrix-isolated alkali metal chlorates; an example of tridentate co-ordination by the chlorate ion

Abstract

The vapours from heated alkali metal chlorates isolated in nitrogen and argon matrices have been studied by infrared spectroscopy. The use of 16O–18O partial isotopic substitution demonstrates the presence of a C3 axis for the molecule CsClO3 isolated in an argon matrix. This is interpreted as the ClO3 ion showing a tridentate interaction with the caesium ion.
