Improvements to the oxygen flask combustion procedure for assay of halogenated organic compounds

Abstract

An improved oxygen flask procedure is described for the accurate, precise and rapid determination of chlorine, bromine and iodine in halogenated organic compounds. Quantitative recoveries were achieved by using neutral hydrazine hydrate in the absorbing solution, which may be titrated potentiometrically directly with silver nitrate solution. Hydrazine hydrate does not interfere under acidic conditions. Accurate and precise results were obtained when the equivalence points were determined by Gran's method.
