Intramolecular reactions of pyridinium-2-carbonyl azides: conversion of amines into aldehydes

Abstract

Upon photolysis N-benzyl-2-azidocarbonylpyridinium salts give benzaldehydes, partially via the γ-lactams (5). N-(2-Phenylethyl) analogues give mixtures of phenylacetaldehydes and benzaldehydes viaγ-(12) and δ-lactams (13).
