Synthesis of β-lactams from imines and 1-lithio-oxy-2-phenylacetylene

Abstract

The ynolate 1-lithio-oxy-2-phenylacetylene, prepared from 3,4-diphenylisoxazole and n-butyl-lithium in tetrahydrofuran at –78 °C, condensed with the electron deficient imines (R1N[double bond, length half m-dash]CHR2) to give the β-lactams [R1NHCH(R2)[graphic omitted]HR2](R1= C6H4NO2-4 and C6H4CO2Et-4; R2= Ph, C6H4Me-3 and C6H4NO2-4).
