Hydrogen bonding and proton transfer in the complexes between pyridinium cations and amines in acetone solution

Abstract

The formation constants of the complexes formed between the pyridinium cation and nineteen amines have been determined in anhydrous acetone. An electrochemical cell used a glass electrode as pH sensor. A correlation exists between the base strength of an amine B and its tendency to form heteroconjugated complexes. The relationships between the overall equilibria constants, K0, proton transfer constants, KPT, and formation constants, K(PyHB+), and ΔpKa in acetone are discussed.
