Cationic carbonyl complexes of ruthenium(II) containing 2,2′-bipyridyl or 1,10-phenanthroline

Abstract

Prolonged reflux of RuCl3·xH2O with stoicheiometric quantities of 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy) or 2,2′ : 6′,2″-terpyridyl (terpy) produces [RuCl(CO)(bipy)2]Cl and [RuCl2(CO)(terpy)] respectively. The complexes [RuCl(CO)(N–N)2]Cl [N–N = bipy or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)] can also be prepared by carbonylation of [RuCl2(N–N)2] in refluxing methanol. Treatment of [RuCl2(N–N)2] with AgSbF6 under 3 atm CO affords [Ru(CO)2(N–N)2][SbF6]2.The spectroscopic properties of these compounds are briefly discussed.
