A new sodium aluminate Na17Al5O16

Abstract

Reaction of sodium oxide with alumina has produced a new sodium aluminate Na17Al5O16(monoclinic, space group Cm) and X-ray crystal structure determination has shown it to consist of discrete Al5O16 chains composed of five AlO4 tetrahedra sharing corners, with almost linear angles about the bridging oxygens.
