New modes of bonding in some platinum derivatives of B18H22: X-ray crystal structures of [(Pt2B18H16)(PMe2Ph)4] and of three structural lsomers of [(PtB18H20)(PMe2Ph)2]

Abstract

Reaction of the deprotonated anti-isomer of B18H22 with cis-[PtCl2(PMe2Ph)2] yields {in addition to the expected [(Pt-η-4-anti-B18H20)(PMe2Ph)2]} a novel µ-η1, η2 isomer in which the Pt(PMe2Ph)2 group bridges the two edge -linked B10 clusters, together with a more compact green diplatina derivative [Pt2B18H16)-(PMe2Ph4] in which the novel confacial conjuncto-borane unit B18H16 is η4-bonded to one Pt (PMe2Ph)2 unit and (η4+η2)-bonded to the other; use of syn-B18H22 provides a third isomer of [(PtB18H20)(PMe2Ph)2].
