Iodimetric determination of copper(II) in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone

Abstract

The iodimetric determination of copper(II) in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone has been studied. Under these conditions, the determination was apparently carried out in the absence of a copper(I) iodide precipitate and so avoided any errors produced by the adsorption of iodine. The presence of the polymer decreases the volatility of iodine, thus avoiding further possible losses. Because the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone enhances the colour of iodine solutions auto-indication may be used. The proposed method was applied to the determination of copper in a brass sample.
