Infrared spectroscopic studies of hydrogen bonded complexes of water with oxygen bases. Part 1.—Aliphatic and alicyclic ketones

Abstract

The infrared spectra of water in dilute solution in nine aliphatic and alicyclic ketones have been recorded. Significant differences have been observed between the spectra of solutions in the short chain and cyclic ketones on the one hand and those of solutions in the longer chain ketones on the other. These differences are interpreted in terms of the different types of intermolecular interactions which, it is proposed, occur in these solutions.

The relative wavenumber shifts and intensities of the component bands observed in the OH-stretching region have been correlated with various physical properties of the solvents in an attempt to use these spectroscopic data as measurements of the relative strengths of the solute–solvent hydrogen bonds.
