Preparation and crystal structures of the first alkali-rich sodium aluminates Na7Al3O8 and Na5AlO4

Abstract

X-Ray crystal structure determinations of two sodium aluminates have shown Na5AlO4(orthorhombic, space group pbca) to contain discrete AlO4 tetrahedra and Na7Al3O8(triclinic, P[1 with combining macron]) to contain a novel ring structure made up of six AlO4 tetrahedra which are linked by four oxygen bridges to form an infinite chain.
