Reaction of [Fe(CO)34-cot)](cot = cyclo-octatetraene) with the tropylium ion: unusual rearrangement of cyclo-octatetraene and cycloheptatriene rings and the X-ray crystal structure of [Fe(CO)34-styryl-cycloheptatriene)]

Abstract

The tropylium ion [C7H7]+ reacts with [Fe(CO)3(η4-cot)](cot = cyclo-octatetraene) to give [Fe(CO)3(η4C15H14)], X-ray studies of which reveal a styrylcyclo-heptatriene ligand; the C7-ring originates from the co-ordinated cot, the pheyl group from the tropylium ion.
