Determination of mercury vapour in air using a passive gold wire sampler

Abstract

The determination of atomic mercury vapour in air in the range 10–120 µg m–3 is described. Mercury vapour was collected by exposing a 1-cm length of gold wire to the air for 5 min, then thermally desorbed from the wire for measurement by atomic-fluorescence spectrometry. The results obtained showed good agreement with those obtained from an acid permanganate wet sampling system.
