Quantitative determination of the exogenous and endogenous storage iron content of haematite workers' lungs

Abstract

A quantitative method using Mössbauer spectroscopy for the determination of the haematite and storage iron content of formalin-fixed lungs is presented. The levels of haematite and storage iron found in the lungs are high, the total Iron content varying between 1.31 and 11.20% of dried lung, with the storage iron contributing between 9.6 and 26.5% of the total iron.
