Kinetic spectroscopy in the far vacuum ultraviolet. Part 5.—Oscillator strengths for the 3s, 4s, 5s, 3d and 4d4PJ– 2p34S 0 transitions in atomic nitrogen

Abstract

A discharge-flow system, incorporating a windowless resonance cell, has been used to generate known concentrations of ground-state 2p34S0[fraction three-over-two] nitrogen atoms. Resonance-absorption measurements for the N 4PJ–2p34S0[fraction three-over-two] transitions with upper-state 3s, 4s, 5s, 3d and 4d configurations have been made as a function of ground-state nitrogen atom concentration. The results gave the following values for the oscillator strengths (∑gkƒik) of these transitions of N: [graphic omitted].

This appears to be the first experimental determination of the oscillator strengths for the 4s, 5s, 3d and 4d transitions. Agreement of the present ∑gkƒik value for the 3s–2p3 transition of N with previous work is good.
