Infrared study of silica immersed in 2,2,4-trimethylpentane + toluene + propionitrile mixtures

Abstract

Infrared spectra of silica immersed in liquid mixtures of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane + propionitrile, toluene + propionitrile and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane + toluene + propionitrile have been recorded using an infrared cell of novel design. Absorbance data, taken from the spectra, enabled the fractions of isolated surface silanol groups perturbed by each component of the liquid mixtures to be evaluated. The results illustrate the applicability of infrared spectroscopy to the study of adsorption from three-component liquid mixtures.
