Kinetic study of the reaction of lead metal with hydrogen bromide in the temperature range 448–548 K

Abstract

The kinetics of the reaction of lead metal with hydrogen bromide have been studied gravimetrically using a silica spring microbalance in the temperature range 448–548 K. The reaction follows a linear rate law at all temperatures studied, indicating facile access of HBr to the metal, with rate constants ranging from 0.633 × 10–9 mol s–1 at 448 K to 5.584 × 10–9 mol s–1 at 548 K, giving lead(II) bromide as the sole reaction product. From the data, a value of 43.8(3) kJ mol–1 was determined for the activation energy of the reaction. The principal contribution to the activation energy was considered to arise from the dissociative chemisorption of HBr.
