Studies on transition-metal nitrido- and oxo-complexes. Part 6. Nitrido-bridged complexes of osmium and ruthenium

Abstract

The new complexes [Os3N2(NH3)8(OH2)6]Cl6, [Os3N2(NH3)8(OH2)6]Cl7, and [Ru3N2(NH3)8(OH)(OH2)5]Cl5 are reported. On the basis of the resonance Raman and i.r. spectra of normal, 2H-, and 15N-substituted forms of the complexes, structures analogous to that found in ‘ruthenium red,’[Ru3O2(NH3)14]Cl6, are proposed. Related structures are proposed for [Os3N2(NH3)6(OH)4(OH2)2] Cl2, [Os3N2(NH3)4(OH)8(OH2)2], K4[Os3N2(CN)10(OH2)4], and K4[Os3N2(CN)8(OH)4(OH2)2]. The possible application of [Os3N2(NH3)8(OH2)6]Cl6 as a cell staining reagent is noted. All the complexes may be regarded as containing M3N26+, M3N27+, or M3N28+‘cores’.
