X-Ray crystal structure of K5[Nb(CN)8], and a change in the structure of [Nb(CN)8]5– in solution

Abstract

An X-ray crystal structure determination has shown that the anion in K5[Nb(CN)8] has dodecahedral (D2d) symmetry with significantly different Nb–C distances of 2·282(4) and 2·242(4)Å for the A and B sites; vibrational spectra indicate that in aqueous solution the structure of the anion changes to the antiprismatic (D4d) form.
