The thermal reaction of chalcone with morpholine and piperidine

Abstract

Chalcone (2) reacts at 160 °C with morpholine to give 1,3-diphenylpropan-1-one (1), acetophenone (5), benzomorpholide (6), 2,4,6-triphenyipyridine (7), 1,4-dibenzoyl-2,3-diphenylbutane (8), and di-αα-morpholinotoluene (9); 2-(α-morpholinobenzylidene)-acetophenone (4) was identified as a reaction intermediate. The reaction of (2) With piperidine proceeds similarly., Evidence is presented which shows that the formation of the various products involves both radical and ionic processes.
