Depsidone synthesis. Part 13. The total synthesis of variolaric acid

Abstract

The total synthesis of 4,7-dihydroxy-9-methyl-10H-isobenzofuro[5,6-b][1,4]benzodioxepin-3.10(1H)-dione (variolaric acid)(1), a lichen depsidone, by functionalization of synthetic methyl 3,6-dimethoxy-1,8-dimethyl-11-oxo-11H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxepin-7-carboxylate (12), is described.
