Synthesis of 2-hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-enone from methyl acrylate

Abstract

The title compound was prepared in 55% yield from the dimer of methyl acrylate, dimethyl 2-methylenepentanedioate. The crucial step in the synthesis involved silica gel as a reaction medium.
