Hard-sphere fluid equation of state

Abstract

A series expansion for a parameter related to the hard-sphere fluid chemical potential is shown to converge much more rapidly than the virial expansion. Using only the first three terms of the new expansion the known virial coefficients B6 and B7 are reproduced accurately and estimates are given for B8, B9 and B10. The chemical potential and the pressure are predicted accurately up to the density of the hard-sphere “glass transition” recently discovered by Woodcock.
