Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of the hydrogen difluoride ion. Part 5.—Vibrational and nuclear magnetic resonance studies of the hydrogen difluoride ion in salts of substituted ammonium cations
Abstract
The 19F magnetic resonance spectra of a number of aryl substituted ammonium hydrogen difluorides have been studied by pulsed methods and the free induction decays compared with that of ammonium hydrogen difluoride. The infrared vibrational spectra of the same salts were also recorded and the fundamental vibration frequencies of the anion assigned. The combined results suggest that although non-centred hydrogen difluoride ions can certainly exist in these salts, the displacements of the proton from the centring position are small and unlikely to exceed 4 pm.
