Molecular complexes. Part 16.—Solvation rather than complex formation as the cause of induced nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts in benzene + chloroform mixtures

Abstract

It is shown that the chemical shifts induced in the components of mixtures of benzene (donor) and chloroform (acceptor) in the presence of cyclohexane cannot be explanined in terms of the formation of simple molecular complexes. However, the induced shifts are satisfactorily rationalized by a model based on the solvation of chloroform by benzene. The solvation shell is shown to contain ∼ 12 molecules of benzene.
