Photoelectron spectra of methylchloramine and methyldichloramine

Abstract

The He(I) photoelectron spectra of methylchloramine, CH3NHCI, and methyldichloramine, CH3NCl2, have been obtained from observation of the products of the gas phase reaction of CH3NH2 and Cl2. Spectrum stripping was used to remove CH3NH2 and Cl2 bands as well as to separate the CH3NHCl and CH3NCl2. The spectra correlate well with calculated ab initio eigenvalues and molecular orbital properties, and show that the N—Cl bonds involve greater interaction than the analogous N—Br bonds in the corresponding bromamines.
