Magneto-optical rotation studies of the structural properties of liquid mixtures. Part 2.—Binary mixtures of some miscible organic components

Abstract

Measurements have been made of the magneto-optical rotations at 435.8 nm of the following binary liquid mixtures: EtOH + cyclohexane, t-BuOH + cyclohexane, MeOH + CCl4, MeOH + dioxan, t-BuOH + dioxan, t-BuCl + dioxan, THF + dioxan, acetic acid + dioxan, cyclohexane + 1,2-dichloroethane, benzene + 1,2-dichloroethane, toluene + 1,2-dichloroethane, CCl4+ 1,2-dichloro-ethane, benzene + toluene, cyclohexane + CCl4, benzene + CCl4, toluene + CCl4, cyclohexane + chlorobenzene, benzene + chlorobenzene, toluene + chlorobenzene, benzene +p-chlorotoluene, toluene +p-chlorotoluene. The departure from ideality of each system was treated in terms of an excess magnetic rotation, αE, and for many systems the variation of αE with composition gave distinct indications of specific interaction between the components of the mixture.
