Far infrared spectra of nematic 4-cyano-4′-n-heptylbiphenyl aligne with electric fields

Abstract

The far i.r. absorption spectrum of 4-cyano-4′-n-heptyl-biphenyl (HCB) in the fied-aligned nematic phase consists of a large number of sharp peaks, most of which are unresolved in the unaligned nematogen; the overall spectral intensity being considerably reduced by polarisation effects as field strength increases.
