Photochemical equivalent of a benzilic acid rearrangement and related conversions

Abstract

Irradiation of a 2-benzyl-2-hydroxybenzo[b]furan-3(2H)-one in acetone–water results in the equivalent of a benzilic acid rearrangement of the aryl benzyl α-diketone formed from homolysis of the heterocycle, to give the 3-benzyl-3-hydroxybenzo[b]furan-2(3H)-one analogue.
