Energy transfer processes involving chromium hexacarbonyl in gas matrices at 10 K

Abstract

Photosensitisation experiments involving the toluene + chromium hexacarbonyl donor–acceptor system have been carried out in argon matrices at 10 K. Energy transfer was monitored throughout the experiments in terms of the total emission spectra, the effect of the metal carbonyl on the phosphorescence lifetime decay characteristics of toluene, and the infrared spectrum of chromium hexacarbonyl in the terminal CO-stretching region. A new featureless emission (λmax at 400 nm) was observed in the mixed matrix experiments and this may be ascribed to 3T1g1A1g chromium hexacarbonyl phosphorescence, which would set the level of the lowest triplet state at ∼3.30 eV (from λonset) above the ground state.
