Photoelectron spectra of the gauche and trans conformers of 1,2-dichloroethane

Abstract

The HeI photoelectron spectra of the gauche and trans conformers of 1,2-dichloroethane have been obtained. Time-averaged digitized spectra recorded at different temperatures have been analysed to obtain stripped spectra which effectively represent each of the two stable conformers. The correlation of the measured ionization potentials for the two conformers with those of ethane are interpreted, with the aid of molecular orbital calculations, in terms of a qualitative molecular orbital description.
