Wide-line N.M.R. analysis of the molecular structure of FSO2OF

Abstract

This article describes an n.m.r. investigation of the magnetic field dependence of the 19F second moment in solid FSO2OF (fluorine fluorosulphate) at 77 K, in order to clarify its molecular structure. These second moment data are consistent with an F—F distance of > 3.6 Å which establishes the molecular structure to be of the trans form; and give a range for the anisotropy of the fluorine chemical shielding tensor in the O—F section of the molecule of 7 × 102 < (σ∥–σ⊥) < 103 p.p.m.
