Electron paramagnetic resonance study of Er3+ and Gd3+ in Cs2NaLnCl6
Abstract
The e.p.r. spectrum of Er3+ : Cs2NaYCl6 has been measured at 4.2 K. This ion has a quartet (Γ8) ground state and the (–½↔½) and (±↔±½) transitions were observed. The Landég-value appears unchanged from the free ion value and a ratio of B4/B6 equal to 429 was found. The nuclear hyperfine structure was resolved in the (–½↔½) transition 30° from the [001] direction. Gadolinium(III) was measured in several different hosts at room temperature and in Cs2NaYCl6 as a function of temperature. A comparison was made with Gd3+ and Eu2+ in the alkaline earth oxides and a slightly different interpretation of those data are suggested.
