Metathesis of heterocycles

Abstract

The perchlorinated aromatic nitrogen heterocycles undergo metathesis and approach equilibrium compositions at ca. 600°C in 3 h according to the equation 1,3,5-C3Cl3N3+ C6Cl6⇌ C4Cl4N2+ C5Cl5N; C4Cl4N2 consists of an equilibrium mixture of tetrachloropyrimidine and tetrachloropyrazine which interconvert by way of their cyanogen chloride Diels–Alder adducts.
