Equilibria and reactions of acetylsulphuric acid in liquid sulphur dioxide

Abstract

Deprotonated acetylsulphuric and acetyldisuiphuric acids form quantitatively when sulphur trioxide is added to acetic acid in liquid sulphur dioxide at –78°. With a SO3 : AcOH mole ratio > 1 formation and ionization of the free acids into acetylium and polysulphate ions occur. A plausible mechanism is given.
