Extrathermodynamic relationships for ion-pair equilibria in media of low dielectric constant

Abstract

The enthalpy and entropy changes for the interconversion both of the tight and loose ion-pairs of a wide variety of carbanions are related by the equation ΔH=αΔS+β where α and β are constants characteristic of the solvent and the cation. A simple electrostatic treatment gives a qualitative explanation of this effect.
