Energy of interaction between a monolayer and a dielectric adsorbent

Abstract

The simple theory of dispersion forces leads to the expression for the energy of interaction between the single layer and the dielectric adsorbent. This energy depends on the density of the adsorbed molecules, and for low densities, one arrives at the form which is equivalent to that obtained by McLachlan in 1964. The energy of interaction yields a correction to the Hill–de Boer adsorption isotherm; this correction explains why the critical temperature of the monolayer usually falls below the value predicted by the simple Hill–de Boer theory.
